Course summary

Component 1 Section A: Analysing Media Language and Representation in relation to two of the following media forms: advertising, marketing, music video or newspapers. Section B: Understanding Media Industries and Audiences in relation to two of the following media forms: advertising, marketing, film, newspapers, radio or video games. Component 2 Section A: Television in the Global Age Section B: Magazines - Mainstream and Alternative Media Section C: Media in the Online Age Component 3 The coursework element where students will undertake extensive research into existing media texts to inform the planning of their own cross-media production. This will include a print magazine and related audio/visual material. The media play a central role in contemporary culture, society and politics. They shape our perceptions of the world through the representations, ideas and points of view they offer. The media have relevance and importance in our lives today, providing us with ways to communicate, forms of cultural expression and the ability to participate in key aspects of society. The globalised nature of the contemporary media landscape, ongoing developments and opportunities to interact with the media suggest their centrality, and increased importance, in contemporary life.

Entry requirements

• At least a Grade 4 in GCSE English Language or GCSE English Literature • At least a Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics • Meet the entry requirements for at least 3 full A Level subjects. Each subject has its own specific entry criteria. • If a student wants to study two or more Science A Levels, they need at least a Grade 6 and a Grade 7 across the subjects at GCSE or a Grade 6,7 in GCSE Combined Science • Grade 5 in GCSE Media Studies or Grade 5 in GCSE English Literature

How you'll be assessed

The course comprises of three components. Component 1 and 2 each equate to 35% of the qualification. Component 3 involves coursework which includes an individual cross-media production (two forms). This makes up the final 30% of the qualification.
