Course summary

Digital Media will provide learners with the opportunity, through applied learning, to develop the core specialist knowledge, skills and understanding required in the digital media sector. Students will develop an understanding of how different media institutions operate to create products that will appeal to specific target audiences. Students will understand the pre-production processes that the creative media industry follows when creating a product. Students will also develop knowledge and understanding of the production processes for producing either a print-based, audio-visual or audio-media product. Digital Media is an excellent opportunity to learn and develop professional-standard skills that are highly desired and sought after in the workplace, across many different media sectors. Digital technologies are changing the world. They play a part in everything – from the way we work, to how we spend our leisure time and how businesses operate. These changes bring lots of new, exciting career opportunities in almost every professional sector. These could include audio-visual technicians, computer games developers, computer service technicians, forensic computer analysts, graphic designers, photographic technicians, web designers, and web editors.

Entry requirements

If you’d like to study Digital Media, you will need at least a Merit in Creative iMedia, or at least a Grade 5 in GCSE Computer Science. If you haven’t studied ICT (or a relevant subject, determined by Head of Faculty) then you will be required to take a test to assess your suitability for this course.

How you'll be assessed

The Digital Media course is comprised of five assessed units, which are graded at a Pass, Merit and Distinction. • Unit 1: Media Products & Audiences (Externally assessed) This unit is exam-based, lasting for 2 hours. • Unit 2: Pre-production & Planning (Externally assessed) This unit is exam-based, lasting for 2 hours. • Unit 3: Create a Media Product (Internally assessed) This unit is internally-assessed, to create a product to meet a client brief. Plus, two further units from: • Unit 7: Journalism & The News Industry (Internally assessed) • Unit 16: The Creation & Use of Sound in Media (Internally assessed) • Unit 20: Advertising Media (Internally assessed)
