Cambridge Technicals offer creative and inspiring vocational qualifications to give a high quality, work focused alternative to A Levels. This course is for students who want to study Sport and Physical Activity in a much higher level of detail than can be achieved at GCSE whilst being assessed in ways that are practical and relevant to the sports industry. The course has been developed in partnership with key employers in the sports industry to ensure the material is challenging; developing in depth knowledge and a range of transferable skills that are essential in the workplace or in further study.
Students must be passionate about sport and physical activity and have an interest in the theory components of the subject, such as sports psychology, sports physiology and sport in society. Students will be assessed in one team sport and one individual sport as part of the course. Therefore regular participation in at least one of these outside of school is important. Cambridge National Sports Studies at a Merit grade or above, or GCSE PE (Sport Science) at grade 4 or above is desirable but not essential. Pupils need to be fully committed to the course and confident in their abilities to coach younger students as part of an assessment.
Students are required to complete eleven units of work over a two-year period. Units 1, 7 and 9 are externally assessed through the use of a written exam, the remaining units are assessed internally through coursework and a variety of assessment methods. Units 2, 5 and 6 require a practical performance in either performing or coaching sport and physical activity, pupils would need to be confident with these skills. Individual units are assessed using criteria set by the exam board, pupils can receive either a pass, merit or distinction for each unit, with an average score taken at the end of the course to determine their overall grade.
