Further Maths develops the content from the A-level in Mathematics, and introduces new and more complex mathematical concepts. In Further Pure Maths (FP), you will study matrices, complex numbers, hyperbolic functions, higher-order linear and non-linear differential equations and coordinate systems, including polar coordinates. The other part of the Further Maths course is Decision Maths. This is the process of applying algorithms to practical problems, including linear programming and optimisation, critical path analysis and algorithms on graphs and networks.
If you’d like to study Further Mathematics, you will need at least a Grade 8 in GCSE Mathematics. Further Maths is an excellent preparation for university, and students who have studied it to at least AS-level are looked upon very favorably by top universities.
The Further Mathematics course is comprised of four assessments, all of which are externally assessed written examinations. • Paper 1: Further Pure Mathematics 1 This exam lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes. This exam is worth 75 marks, which is worth 25% of the course certification. • Paper 2: Further Pure Mathematics 2 This exam lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes. This exam is worth 75 marks, which is worth 25% of the course certification. • Paper 3: Decision Mathematics 1 This exam lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes. This exam is worth 75 marks, which is worth 25% of the course certification. • Paper 4: Decision Mathematics 2 This exam lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes. This exam is worth 75 marks, which is worth 25% of the course certification.
