Course summary

Unit 1: Students will explore how the human memory operates and how it can be distorted in our everyday life. Students will explore the concepts of conformity, obedience and how minority groups can make big changes in society. You will learn why people develop phobias, OCD and depression. The topic explores how we can treat these psychological disorders. The final part of Unit 1 is looking at attachment and early childhood. Unit 2: Students will complete their own independent psychological study using their research method knowledge. You will explore different approaches in psychology; such as biologically or environmental reasons for human behaviour. Students will look at the brain and explain what can happen when we experience trauma. Unit 3: Students will address the issues and debates in Psychology. They will explain how we deal with ethical issues and why it is important to consider the different methods of investigation. Students will study three options including Gender, Forensic and Schizophrenia. They will be able to answer questions on a range of topics including the influence of media and culture on gender and how prisoners can be rehabilitated and explain what the risk factors are in schizophrenia.

Entry requirements

• Entry to the Sixth Form is based on meeting the standard entry requirements. These include the passing of Maths and English Language at a grade 4. • In addition to this we use a calculation called Attainment 8 to work out a score for students to indicate their suitability for each pathway. This score is generated by combining a students’ best 8 subject grades, counting English and Maths twice and including a minimum of three Ebacc subjects; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Core & Additional Science, Computer Science, History, Geography, French, Spanish and German. For Waingels students this score will be included in any reports home. • A Level Pathway (selecting only A Levels): 50 ( Average Grade 5) • A grade 5 in English Language and Maths. No previous Psychology background is required however they will need at least a grade 4 if the student sat GCSE Psychology, their grade will be a good indicator of success on the A Level course.
