Shared experiences of watching theatre and creating performances as a group, meaning each Drama lesson is unique! Research will be key through reading, pictures, clips, rehearsal, analysis, evaluation and performance development. Students will hone their skills of acting, directing and design, but moreover, they will develop communication, collaboration, and critical analysis. Trips to the theatre are hugely enjoyable, and an integral part of the course, and students will evaluate the performance, effect on the audience and design. Candidates are required to show knowledge and understanding of:- • How performers, designers and directors communicate meaning. • Theatre practice through their own engagement with the medium as both participant and informed audience member.
Grade 6 in Drama or English Literature
Both performer and designer focuses are possible for Components 1 and 2. Component 1 - Devising:- Students devise an original performance piece and use one key extract from a text and a theatre practitioner as stimuli, with a written portfolio 2,500-3,000 words detailing the devising process and the final devised performance / design realisation internally assessed. Component 2 - Text in performance:- A group performance / design realisation and a monologue or duologue performance / design realisation, each from one key extract from a different performance text, assessed by a visiting examiner. Component 3 - Theatre makers in practice:- Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes; Live theatre evaluation; Practical exploration and study of a complete text (Equus or Accidental Death of an Anarchist) – focusing on how this can be realised for performance; Practical exploration and interpretation of another complete performance text (Antigone), in light of a chosen practitioner – focusing on how this text could be re-imagined for a contemporary audience.
