
Our experienced A-Level team will explore key themes in English literature, and develop vital skills in language. Students will explore a dynamic range of texts linked to key themes and skills:- Remembered places, Imagined worlds, Poetic voice, Society, Critical commentary, Dramatic encounters, and Making connections. Texts studied may include:- Frankenstein / The Handmaids Tale, Poems form a single poet, The Great Gatsby, The Kite Runner, Othello, A Streetcar Named Desire, Non-literary sources (in a project), such as social media and web resources. Analysing how literary and linguistic techniques are used to convey meaning, tone and pace, as well as seeing how authors reflect on the contextual issues of the day (and link to issues today too!). Students also get the opportunity to respond creatively, to develop their ability as writers.
Grade 6 or above in English Literature and Language
Two examinations at the end of Year 13, and a Non-Examination Assessment (NEA, or “coursework”) Paper 1: Three hour written paper, on:- Section A – Remembered places: One compulsory question on the AQA Anthology: Paris; Closed book. Section B – Imagined worlds: One question from a choice of two on set text ; Open book. Section C – Poetic voices: One question from a choice of two on poetry set text; Open book. Paper 2: Two and a half hour written paper on:- Section A – Writing about society: One piece of re-creative writing using set text and Critical commentary; Open book. Section B – Dramatic encounters: One question from a choice of two on drama set text; Open book. NEA: Personal investigation exploring a specific technique or theme in both literary and non-literary discourse (2,500–3,000 words), assessed by the teacher.
