Course summary

A Level History consists of two taught components and one student led historical investigation. The Breadth study will cover Tudor England: 1485-1603. The second component is a depth study covering France in Revolution: 1775-1815. The NEA iis a research project requiring independent learning on a student chosen topic, but outside of the time periods and subject topics of the taught components. Popular options include Civil Rights in the USA 1865 - 1992, and The Stuarts. Classroom debates, detailed research and note-taking, student-led presentations, group work, and of course trips will form key parts of the course.

Entry requirements

History at Grade 6 or higher (or equivalent Humanities at 6 or higher)

How you'll be assessed

Two papers, each of 2 hours and 30 minutes at the end of Year 13. A NEA of a maximum of 4000 words. Paper 1: Breadth Study: Analysis of historians’ interpretations in one essay, and two further essays from a choice of three. Paper 2: Depth study: Analysis of three primary sources in one essay, and two further essays from a choice of three. NEA: The topic will be of the student’s choosing, alongside the teacher. Independent research, source analysis, evaluation of varying historians’ interpretations come together to form the extended argument, at a sophisticated level.
