Course summary

Politics lessons will be filled with research in to current political issues and developments, discussion and debate, and detailed notes. Individual and group work will be equally prevalent, alongside student presentations, and extended answers. Students will be expected to keep up to date with recent Political news on a weekly basis. Year 12 focuses on British Government and Politics, including Prime Minister, Cabinet, Parliament, Parties, Elections, Voting behaviour, Civil Service, Pressure Groups, Constitution, Judiciary, Devolution, Referenda, and the EU. We will also begin to study core ideologies such as Liberalism and Conservatism. In Year 13, the same areas are covered for the USA, with the addition of the Supreme Court, Federalism, President, and Civil Rights. The study of political ideologies will conclude with Socialism, and one out of Nationalism, Anarchy or Feminism (taking student interest as the key determinant)

Entry requirements

Grade 5 in English. Desirable to have Grade 6 in History and English.

How you'll be assessed

3 papers, each of two hours, with medium and essay questions, as well as a source stimulus in each paper. Paper 1: Government and Politics of the UK Paper 2: Government and Politics of the USA and comparative Politics Paper 3: Political Ideas
