Course summary

English Literature remains a popular choice of A Level at Hulme, and our results have been consistently impressive. Many students who study English Literature go on to read Law at university, but many enter careers in general management, research and consultancy work, the public services as well as publishing and many different creative industries. A Level English Literature really is a very versatile and flexible qualification, which sits alongside any other subject and is transferable to any career. Employers are looking for high levels of communication and empathy skills and an English A Level subject is guaranteed to nurture and develop these skills in a broad and balanced way. The Pearson Edexcel qualification is intended to develop students’ enjoyment and understanding of literature through critical reading and personal engagement with texts. The course involves a study of all three genres: drama, prose and poetry and includes Shakespeare and 3 pre-1900 texts. Lessons will encourage creative and critical discussion and will focus on different ways of evaluating texts, including the importance of historical context, the writer’s craft and different critical interpretations. Independent study is also important, especially for the NEA component.

Entry requirements
