Latin
Course summary
The study of Latin enables students to explore the language and culture of the Romans, learning first-hand how they communicated with one another and gaining an invaluable insight into life in the ancient world. To learn Latin is to learn about the linguistic history of western language. It complements most other subjects given the logical thinking skills required for translation. In addition, it can greatly assist with the study of modern languages as knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar of Latin provides a firm basis for understanding the way in which languages work more generally. The ability to read Latin grants students access to some of the great works of Western literature – works which often addressed concerns that remain on the modern agenda. The opportunity to study Latin literature thus stimulates vital consideration of both ancient and modern social, political and cultural values.
