Course summary

Music at A level extends the skills acquired at GCSE into more specialist areas whilst still allowing a full range of opportunities. The foundation for a lifetime enjoyment of the Music is extended, giving opportunity for entry into Higher Education and the development of personal skills in the subject. The Music course is divided into three units: Performing, Composing and Appraising. In terms of the latter, students study 18 set works which are divided into five categories: Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Music for Film, Popular Music and Jazz, Fusions and New Directions. The Performance and Composition are practical units which in the case of the former require around a Grade 5 level on an instrument.

Entry requirements

Advanced level students will need to be committed to practical performance and to sharing their skills with others, including regular performance practice. Entry level of Grade 5 or equivalent is recommended for the Music course.
