AQA's A Level Art and Design Photography course specification has been designed to; enable candidates to develop personal responses to ideas, observations, experiences, environments and cultures. Extend the existing flexibility to allow students to work from their strengths. Provide an appropriate foundation for further study of Photography or related subjects in Higher Education. Students work should include practical and critical/contextual work in one or more areas(s) of Photography such as portraiture, documentary, photo-journalism, environmental photography, still life or experimental imagery.
Ideally, students choosing to embark upon the A level photography course should have attained at least a grade 7 in GCSE Photography or show evidence of adequate skills, enthusiasm and understanding of photography.
Component 1 (60% 0f total marks) - Personal investigation Students complete a personal investigation based on an idea, issue, concept or theme of their choice supported by a 1000-3000-word written assignment. Component 2 (40% of total marks) - Externally set assignment Students create a body of visual and written work in response to a theme given by AQA. This has a supervised time of fifteen hours and is internally marked and moderated by AQA by a visit to the Centre
