Course summary

The aims and objectives of the Edexcel A level in Biology B are to enable students to develop: ● essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other ● and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods ● Competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem-solving skills ● their interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, including developing an interest in further study and careers associated with the subject ● understanding of how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society. Topics taught: Biology offers a thorough, no-nonsense run-through of familiar topics - genetics, reproduction, evolution, classification, our circulatory system and transport in plants, respiration, photosynthesis, microorganisms, immunity, biotechnology, nerves, hormones, ecosystems and climate change. Sixteen core practicals are assessed and awarded separately to the three exam papers, ensuring hands-on experience coupled with academic rigour. Skills taught: Students will be expected to demonstrate and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills described in the content for each topic. In addition, they will be expected to analyse, interpret and evaluate a range of scientific information, ideas and evidence using their knowledge, understanding and skills. To demonstrate knowledge, students should be able to undertake a range of activities, including the ability to recall, describe and define, as appropriate. To demonstrate understanding, students should be able to explain ideas and use their knowledge to apply, analyse, interpret and evaluate, as appropriate.

Entry requirements

External candidates to the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle: • Candidates must have a minimum grade of 9 in French GCSE, a minimum of 6 in 5 GCSEs and a minimum of 7 in the subjects they wish to study for the A-Levels • Candidates meet Mr McNaught for an interview and are assessed individually in writing on 2 subjects they wish to take to A-Levels Candidates from the Lycée (French section): • Candidates must have sat the IGCSE English Language and achieved a minimum score of B • Candidates meet Mr McNaught for an interview. They may also be individually assessed in writing (Maths or English, depending on A-level choices and English ability) • 2GSCE candidates from the Lycée (British section): To be admitted in PAL, 2GCSE students must have a minimum of 6 in 5 GCSEs and a minimum of 7 in the subjects they wish to study for the A-Levels. (Students wishing to study Economics must have at least a grade 7 in Mathematics and at least a 7 in English. Students wishing to study History of Art must have at least a grade 7 in English or History and similarly, for Government & Politics, a grade 7 is required in English or History/Geography. Each borderline case is considered on its merits)

How you'll be assessed

Percentage in examinations/coursework: A-level Biology is 100% externally assessed. Core practicals also form part of the practical competency assessment made by the teacher, which is awarded as a “Science Practical Endorsement” Pass or Fail on the A level certificate in addition to the A level grade. Exam structure: These papers will assess material from both years of the course, testing students' knowledge of the deeper understanding gained at full A level.
