Course summary

Sociology is the study of interactions between social institutions and social actors (individuals) in society. It offers a real insight into everyday life and enables us to see our world in a new light. We come to realise that things are not always what they may appear to be. This fascinating, ‘real world’ subject focuses on the impact that social institutions such as political, legal, family and education systems have on all of us every day and how we influence them. Differing explanations of society such as Feminism, Marxism and Functionalist theory are examined extensively throughout this course. There is a strong methodological theme running through both years of study. Sociology is a popular and academically demanding subject which requires a wide range of skills. Students enjoy the variety of activities in lessons and the frequent opportunities to take part in class discussions and engage in debates around contemporary issues. As the course is assessed through examinations, essay writing will be an integral part of your studies. A keen interest in world affairs and issues relating to class, gender, ethnicity, equality is essential.
