Significant events, individuals and issues will be studied from a range of historical perspectives, incorporating the history of more than one country, as well as a substantial element of British history. History teaches students to think and write critically, encouraging intellectual rigour in handling sources and evidence and giving training in practical research and presentation skills of enduring use. History is highly regarded by universities and employers because students who study it develop experience in gathering and analysing information. A History qualification is useful in many careers such as Journalism, Teaching, the Legal Profession, the Civil Service, the Diplomatic Service, the Media, (International) Business, Accountancy, Finance, Management.
GCSE at grade 6 is preferred. However, it may not be essential for an able pupil to have studied History at GCSE, as long as they have high grades in essay writing subjects such as English Literature or Religious Studies. A strong facility with the reading and writing of English is essential for success with this subject at A Level. A willingness to undertake wide reading and confidence with the evaluation of historical documents will greatly facilitate study. A key vocabulary list for starters is available on request.
