Music is one of the most powerful means of selfexpression there is, influencing society and challenging authority. A Level music is exciting and rewarding, unique in combining academic study with creative opportunities to develop the whole person and promote emotional wellbeing. An integral part of society, the further study of music develops deeper understanding of historical conventions and culture. The academic skills of analysis, research and essay writing, the self-expression required for composition and the dedication, creativity and self-assurance developed through performance make musicians highly desirable candidates.
For entry into the Sixth Form, candidates are required to have at least six good passes at GCSE, including English and Maths.
The course comprises 60% non-examined assessment (performance and techniques of composition) and 40% written examination, comprising a 2hour 10minute paper. The written unit comprises short answer questions, extended answers, aural analysis, dictation and two extended essays
