Work is modular and enables students to explore a wide range of experiences within the medium of textiles, with one coursework project and one externally set assignment. There is a strong emphasis on observational skills and direct personal experience. Experimental work which includes; constructed and embellished textiles, dyeing, printing and fine art introduces students to a variety of techniques through which you can communicate your ideas. Projects are designed to stimulate visual awareness through pictorial research of both historical and contemporary artists. Students learn to view artists’ work within its context and recognise the work’s relevance in relationship to your own creative development. Project based work will allow you to pursue an idea from initial research and through to preparation for a final textiles or fashion piece.
To achieve the maximum potential for the course, you should have a good grade at GCSE in a Textiles based discipline or Art and Design, a pass with a Grade 5/6 (or equivalent) is desirable. You should also have a supporting portfolio of textiles work.
The following assessment criteria is applied to all units: AO1 Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding. AO2 Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops. AO3 Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress. AO4 Present a personal and meaningful response that realizes intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements. Each assessment carries an equal percentage of 25% of the final mark. The weighting of components one and two are equal - 50%.
