The Classical Civilisation classes are usually small and for that reason the classes are able to choose the papers they want to study. Each year consists of a Classical text - Iliad or Odyssey in Year 12 and Aeneid in Year 13. On top of that, pupils choose one 'Beliefs & Ideas' paper (previous topics include Greek Religion & Democracy and the Athenians) and one 'Culture & The Arts' paper (for instance, Greek Art or Greek Theatre). The aim is usually to strike a balance between Greek and Roman culture but papers are selected according to the strengths and interests of each cohort.
There are no entry requirements and you do not need to have studied Classics at GCSE to take the A Level. Although Classical Civilisation is an 'essay' subject, those with SEN should not be put off.
The course is assessed with 3 examinations in Year 13.
