The course is designed to develop candidates’ knowledge about language and their skills as language users and analytical thinkers, and will provide an excellent skills base to support other subjects at university and beyond. We explore aspects of the relationship between language and the human mind and examine questions such as ‘Can small children think if they don’t have language?’
Candidates should have at least a grade 6 in GCSE English Language. They should enjoy analysing a wide variety of text types written for different purposes and audiences. Candidates should enjoy a challenge as they come to terms with the complexities of English grammar; have enquiring minds and be genuinely fascinated by the study of language in all its forms. They should remember that ‘power is with the articulate!’
Paper 1—40% One written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes. Paper 2—40% One written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes. Paper 3—20% Language investigation (2,000 words) and a piece of original writing and commentary (750 words each).
