Biology is one of the fastest moving fields of science and plays an important role in our everyday lives. You will enjoy the course if you like finding out about how processes work in living organisms, and if you have an interest in environmental issues. The A level course builds on topics covered at GCSE, enabling you to develop analytical and experimental skills, as well as considering the responsible use of Biology within society.
In order to study A level Biology, you will need to have at least a Grade 6 in GCSE Combined Science or Biology and a grade 6 in Mathematics.
Year 1 - Internal examinations Paper 1: Multiple choice and structured questions covering theory and practical skills (1 hour 30 minutes - 50%) Paper 2: Structured questions and extended response questions, covering theory and practical skills (1 hour 30 minutes - 50%) Assessment: Year 2 - A level Paper 1: Biological Processes. Multiple choice and structured questions covering theory and practical skills 2 hours 15 minutes - 37% Paper 2: Biological Diversity. Multiple choice and structured questions covering theory and practical skills 2 hours 15 minutes - 37% Paper 3: Unified Biology. Structured questions and extended response questions, covering theory and practical skills 1 hour 30 minutes - 26% A level also includes a Practical Skills Endorsement which will be reported separately as pass / fail.
