Course summary

A Level Sociology looks at social issues such as why inequality happens, the nature of our society and how to understand society. The course focuses on developing an understanding of the world around us, the ideas and concepts of different sociological theories and a critical understanding of the society we live in. The course develops these critical analysis skills through comparison and evaluation and in reference to contemporary materials. It also looks at the ways in which sociologists test various theories through research methods.

Entry requirements

A minimum of five GCSE subjects at grade 4 or above. A good grade in English is recommended because of the essay based assessment and the use of complex terminology. It is also important to have done well in another Humanities subject (typically History, Geography, Religious Studies or even Sociology) because of some of the similarities in content and skills required. A GCSE in sociology is not a requirement for the course. Having an interest in current affairs and how they shape our world is desirable.

How you'll be assessed

Students will be assessed by examination at the end of the course. There are no coursework requirements.
