The study of English is the study of the human condition. Developing articulacy and creative expression, while exploring some of the world's greatest written work, is key to engaging more fully both with the art of the past and with the increasingly complex world in which we now live. English is central to other subjects, offering nuanced perspectives across the curriculum, from the musicality of poetry to the social, historical, political and religious contexts that have influenced a writer’s craft. Language and literacy skills are key to success in every facet of a student’s academic career, as they develop the means to communicate convincingly and compellingly. Students will study: • Shakespeare's play e.g. Othello • Modern play e.g. Streetcar Named Desire • Modern poetry (post-2000) • Pre 20th Century poetry e.g. Victorians, Romantics • Pre 20th Century novel e.g. Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights • Modern prose (1945 onwards) e.g. A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Handmaid’s Tale Desirable Qualities and Skills for Success: • Good written expression • Passion for and proficiency in reading • Critical thinking • Creativity • Interest in historical events/current affairs • Enjoyment of discussion and debate Popular A-Level Pairings: • History • Classical Civilisation • Government and Politics • Languages • Psychology • Religious Studies • Theatre Studies
