Students who have enjoyed both the language and the literature components at GCSE will enjoy Latin at A Level. A facility to learn vocabulary easily is also necessary. If you vaguely enjoyed GCSE Latin, seriously consider A Level. The course covers a range of language work, translation from Latin to English and reading of poetry and prose authors such as Ovid, Virgil, Catullus Tacitus and Cicero. This subject is looked upon most favourably by university admissions tutors because it implies excellent communication skills and problem-solving abilities, together with an ability to write fluently and accurately. It is, moreover, highly worthwhile to study Latin to appreciate the extent of the literary contribution made by Roman writing to the western canon. It goes without saying, of course, that it is worth studying for its own sake.
