The Mathematics A Level consists of topics in Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics. We study all three areas in both year12 and year 13. • In Pure Mathematics, we develop the algebraic techniques begun at GCSE and are introduced to Calculus – the mathematics of change. • In Mechanics we learn how Pure Mathematics can be applied to physical systems such as bouncy balls, projectiles, trains and space rockets. • The study of Statistics allows us to present data in meaningful ways, test hypotheses and win at gambling (probably).
You need to have achieved a minimum of grade 7 at GCSE if you want to study Mathematics A Level.
We follow the Edexcel examination board A Level syllabus. There is no coursework in A Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics. At the end of Year 13 there will be A Level examinations consisting of two 2-hour Pure Mathematics examinations and a 2-hour Mechanics and Statistics examination.
