Economics is not just about numbers and the stock market. It is the study of the world around us from a social, financial, environmental and cultural perspective. Economics is always topical – whatever the breaking news story on the front of the Financial Times, an understanding of economics provides an appreciation of its significance. Being a global subject, Economics feeds transferable knowledge, analytical and evaluative skills that can be applied to future study, work or home life. The Economics department aims to run annual trips along with the Business department, alternating between Frankfurt and Cuba in recent years. The two departments also share access to guest speakers, societies and elective courses in Lower Sixth (the Mini-MBA and the CISI: Fundamentals of Financial Services Qualification). Considered a social science, Economics is a highly regarded academic field of study and suits ambitious pupils who have a genuine interest in current affairs. It is essential that those who choose to study Economics have sound numeracy skills and the ability to write balanced essays. There is rarely a right answer in Economics, but any argument put forward must be backed up by quantitative evidence. Pupils at Cheltenham enjoy the subject because it allows them to employ and develop analytical and evaluative skills.
Grade 7 in Mathematics.
At the end of the Upper Sixth, assessment is taken via three two-hour exam papers: microeconomics, macroeconomics and synoptic (a combination of micro and macro theory).
