We believe that our Art students experience better well-being, better health, greater self-awareness and spiritual, and mental space. Art provides students with an unrivalled opportunity to work creatively, with a high degree of independence and freedom of choice over the direction of their studies. Learning is not dictated. Our approach falls under the all-encompassing Fine Art-based umbrella. Alongside painting and drawing you will be offered the opportunity to develop more diverse skills essential to any artistic and design-based discipline including the digital realm, graphic, product and fashion design, as well as sculpture, photography and film-making. The ability to select and direct one’s own chosen subject matter and develop ideas through practical projects in a bespoke programme of study through consultation with a team of staff is challenging, as well as immensely rewarding. Now housed in extraordinary accommodation, the larger department is one built for the 21st century; it has a greater profile and makes us more visible. The studios are dynamic, adaptable formal and informal spaces. The successful artist must remain open to new possibilities offered by the subject, materials, processes, staff and peers. Our great emphasis is on dialogue and feedback about practical outcomes. Your work will be critiqued and exhibited throughout the year and at the Private View which is attended by a wide range of people. There are several options available after RGS. Art remains an enjoyable and popular option for many students. It remains one of the most important steps towards academic success. The subject complements all other choices and therefore positively supports entry to a diverse array of University courses. A Level of Art is a primary prerequisite for anyone who wishes to study Architecture and a portfolio is required for direct entry application to the phenomenal array of art and design-based courses now on offer. Our Old Novocastrians go on to become architects, designers, engineers, linguists, lawyers, medics and business/ finance graduates. They are an eclectic and excited bunch.
