The new A Level Art and Design course is exciting and challenging. Students are able to develop their creative potential whilst developing their technical skills in a wide range of media. This two year course consists of two parts; a foundation or developmental stage in the Lower Sixth and a moderated and examined stage in the Upper Sixth. In the Lower Sixth, students develop their skills in a wide range of techniques through a series of short projects. In the Upper Sixth they use these skills to produce a coursework unit called the ‘personal investigation’ and complete an examination unit in response to an externally set title.
Students will normally have completed a GCSE Art and Design course with a good pass (Grade 6 or above, though particularly committed students at Grade 5 will be considered). Students new to the school should submit their portfolio of work. At A Level, good written English is necessary for the completion of the 1000 – 3000 word personal investigation.
