Studying classical languages at A Level will build on the skills and knowledge you have developed at GCSE. The first year of study involves two components of study: language, with a prescribed range of grammar and literature, based on the verse and prose set texts that will be studied throughout the year. The second year of the course will see you study another prose and verse literature text as well as deepen your understanding of the language. Classical languages are well-regarded by both universities and employers due to their academic rigor as you will have developed a highly transferable skill set. Both subjects complement many university courses, including Medicine, History, Classics, Law, Physics, English, Modern Foreign Languages and Arabic.
New entrants must have a minimum of Grade 5 in GCSE English Language and Maths Grade 7-9 in the chosen subject at GCSE is strongly recommended. It is also important that you enjoy the subject as you will be reading a lot of literature in its original language. Please complete a registration form online and we will then be in touch about arranging a possible interview.
- Four exams at the end of the second year, which are a combination of short answer questions and longer essay questions. - Two literature exams (one prose, one verse). - Two language exams (one unseen translation and one prose composition or comprehension). - In both subjects, you will be assessed on your grasp and application of grammatical concepts and your knowledge of vocabulary through the translation of unseen passages.
