The Art Department is a vibrant place where students can explore ideas and create a diverse range of artwork. We recognise the continuing importance of traditional skills and disciplines whilst embracing contemporary ideas and practices. We encourage experimentation and have a wide range of expertise, resources and equipment to enable students to gain higher levels of skill, knowledge, and understanding, and develop the confidence to take creative risks. The Art Department is enjoying a very exciting time as we moved into brand new, purpose-built accommodation in September 2018, which includes two teaching rooms, exhibition spaces and a Sixth Form Art studio. Both A-level Art and Textiles courses are offered within the department with some students each year electing to study both. They are delivered as multidisciplinary courses and the wide range of skills that students acquire will enable them to generate sophisticated ideas from a whole host of starting points and stimuli. More in-depth contextual research and refined critical thinking skills are developed, supported by several visits to galleries and exhibitions which in turn, expose students to both historical and contemporary artwork as well as that from other cultures. Candidates have the opportunity to develop their creative skills in surface design techniques, fashion and fine art approaches. They may wish to work with a range of textile materials and techniques, for example, creating a large-scale wall hanging or sculptural garment.
Candidates must have a minimum of 6 GCSEs grade 6 and above, including maths and English, and grade 7s in the A-level subjects they wish to study (where relevant).
There is a greater level of enquiry expected and exposure to more ambitious approaches as candidates work through two components: • Personal Investigation (Coursework element – 60% of overall grade) • Externally Set Assignment (Exam project – 40% of overall grade)
