The study of English is the study of the human condition. Developing articulacy and creative expression, while exploring some of the world's greatest written work, is key to engaging more fully both with the art of the past and with the increasingly complex world in which we now live. English is central to other subjects, offering nuanced perspectives across the curriculum, from the musicality of poetry to the social, historical, political and religious contexts that have influenced a writer’s craft. Language and literacy skills are key to success in every facet of a student’s academic career, as they develop the means to communicate convincingly and compellingly. Students will study: • Drama e.g. A Doll’s House, Death of a Salesman • Prose e.g. Americanah, The Yellow Wallpaper, Dracula • Poetry e.g. John Donne, Philip Larkin, Carol Ann Duffy • Texts in translation e.g. Death of Ivan Ilyich, The Outsider, Antigone • Essays (Higher Level Only) e.g. Maya Angelou, George Orwell
