Politics attempts to analyse, understand and explain the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes. The Level focus is on parliament, government and the people; representative democracy; participation; the structures of authority and power; the rights and responsibilities of individuals; engagement with contemporary politics in the UK; current political debates; and the links between political ideologies and political action. In the second year, we study global politics and the challenges which will require global cooperation if they are to be resolved. We study areas such as globalisation and its impacts and the origins and effectiveness of international law on areas like the environment and human rights. Which subjects combine well with Politics? History, Sociology, Psychology and Economics. What can Politics lead to? A good grade in Politics at A Level is valued by universities and employers since it requires the development of analytical skills and demonstrates the ability to evaluate political, social and economic issues. This course also lays an appropriate foundation for further study of government and politics or related subjects in higher education such as Law.
Applicants should have the required background experience and qualifications to start a course. For a typical A Level course, the College normally requires 5 GCSE passes at grades A* - C / 9 - 4, including English and Mathematics. A satisfactory IELTS score is an alternative to GCSE.
