This course inspires pupils to become independent theatre-makers with the skills they need to go on to higher education, whether that is to study a course in Drama and Theatre or another subject. This qualification emphasize practical creativity alongside research and theoretical understanding. Pupils learn through experience, seeing theatre and making theatre for themselves. There is a wide range of theatrical styles and contexts introduced as pupils explore plays practically, devise and work on performances. At Cheltenham, there is a suite of specialist rooms, a black box theatre, a dance studio and dedicated classrooms for teaching. Beyond the classroom there are opportunities to take part in workshops from visiting practitioners and attend numerous live performances both locally and in the West End.
In general, the minimum requirement for pursuing a subject at A Level is a Grade 6 or B at GCSE, either in the subject itself or in a closely related one.
Both practical units also involve the writing of assessed coursework. This is a highly practical course, which will rarely see pupils sitting in the classroom as content is taught through group work, discussion and practical workshops.
