Course summary

Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology • This is a mandatory unit for all three qualifications which involves students exploring how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems. This unit is assessed through an external examination. Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being This is a mandatory unit for all three qualifications which involves students exploring client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming to support improvements in a client's health and well-being. This unit is assessed through an external examination. Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industries • This is a mandatory unit for all three qualifications which involves students exploring the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on, a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities. Unit 4: Sports Leadership •This is a mandatory unit for the Diploma and Extended Diploma qualifications which involves students exploring what makes a good leader, the different capacities of this role, and the leadership skills and techniques necessary when leading activities in different roles. Unit 7: Practical Sports Performance • This is a mandatory unit for the Extended Diploma qualification which involves students exploring the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of selected sports through active participation in individual/team sports. Unit 8: Coaching for Performance This is a mandatory unit for the Extended Diploma qualification, which involves students exploring the techniques, personal knowledge and ability to deliver coaching sessions. Unit 9: Research Methods in Sport • This is a mandatory unit for the Extended Diploma qualification, which involves students examining the importance of research, factors affecting the quality of research, an introduction to research and the different methods commonly used in sport-based research. Unit 19: Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity • This is a mandatory unit for the Extended Diploma qualification which involves students exploring the development and provision of sport in the UK and its relationship with global sport, including understanding what is needed to write a proposal for a sports development project. This unit is assessed through an external examination. Unit 22: Investigating Business in Sport and the Active Leisure Industry • This is a mandatory unit for the Diploma and Extended Diploma qualifications which involves students exploring the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on, a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities. This unit is assessed through an external examination. Unit 23: Skill Acquisition in Sport • This is a mandatory unit for the Diploma and Extended Diploma qualifications which involves students examining the factors that contribute to a skilled performance in sport and examine how sports performers learn and develop their skills.

Entry requirements

Students must have achieved Grades 9-4 in four GCSE subjects, to include GCSE English Language or Literature and GCSE Mathematics.

How you'll be assessed

The Extended Diploma is equivalent in size to three A-Levels and consists of ten mandatory units and four additional units. Four of these units are assessed by examination and ten are coursework based.
