How you'll be assessed

Paper 1: Britain, 1930-97 with a focus on Churchill (25% of A-Level grade) • This course starts by examining Churchill's often highly controversial career, paying particular attention to his role as wartime leader. It then explores the post-war governments of prime ministers such as Attlee, Wilson and Thatcher, whose administrations all reflected the challenges then facing Britain. We consider Britain as it faced the difficulties of emerging from WW2, losing an Empire and searching for a new role. Paper 2: Russia, 1894-1941 (15% of A-Level grade) • This course examines the collapse of the Tsarist regime as Russia underwent the Revolution of 1917, one of the defining events of the 20th century. Students will gain an understanding of the causes of revolutionary activity in Russia and how Tsar Nicholas II tried in vain to destroy it. The course explores how and why the Revolution occurred, as well as its consequences, from the Civil War to the policies of Lenin's eventual successor, Stalin. Paper 3: The Challenge of German Nationalism, 1789-1919, (40% of A-Level grade) • The focus of this course is to understand how a diverse collection of 314 states in central Europe with little in common but a shared language was unified into one of the world's great powers. In exploring this period, students gain a deeper understanding both of wider European history and the broader context of developments in the 20th century. The making of Germany was in part the result of the romantic ideas of poets and philosophers, the guile of a brilliant statesman and war. Paper 4: Topic based essay (20% of A-Level grade) • The purpose of this coursework is to enable students to develop skills in the analysis and evaluation of interpretations of history in a chosen question, problem or issue as part of an independently researched assignment. Topics could focus on subjects like the Crusades, the Tudors, the British Empire, the Vietnam War...or anything that you find interesting. The choice is yours.
