Course summary

Students acquire skills in research and are taught to find information beyond the course using academic books and articles. Our course covers three core areas which holistically provide a thorough introduction to Politics. • UK Politics and Government: introduces students to issues such as whether UK democracy suffers from a democratic deficit, whether the UK should have a codified constitution and whether the UK Prime Minister and Government represent an ʻelective dictatorship’. Many students leave the course feeling empowered that they understand the country in which they live. • Global Politics: is often a favourite subject for many students. It traditionally covers aspects of international relations that students will examine in greater depth at university level. It includes issues such as whether global politics is characterised by conflict or peace or whether the UN is fit for purpose given the human rights violations and conflicts that occur at any given time. • Political Ideas: examines liberalism, conservatism, socialism and anarchism, looking at their perspectives on human nature, society, the state and the economy. Questions considered by students include whether human nature is evil or whether the state should exist.
