The GCSE course in French builds on the key skills and knowledge acquired during Key Stage 3. Emphasis is placed on developing pupils’ confidence in speaking and writing French in a variety of contexts. Communication and translation skills are underpinned by a sound understanding of French grammar. Studying a variety of authentic texts ensures pupils develop a broad vocabulary as well as an appreciation of the culture of France and French-speaking communities and their way of life. Having a GCSE qualification in a modern foreign language is increasingly highly valued by universities and employers and, as such, is an asset in most careers. Subject content centres around three main themes: Theme 1: Identity and Culture including family and relationships, technology and social media, entertainment and sport, festivals, food and celebrations. Theme 2: Local, National, International and Global areas of Interests including home, town and region, travel and tourism, healthy/unhealthy living, social and environmental issues and voluntary work. Theme 3: Current and Future Study and Employment including school life, education, future careers and ambitions.
All applicants are invited to attend our assessment day, during which they will sit entrance papers in Maths and English, followed by an online assessment and interview with the Principal. As part of the 13+ assessment, candidates will sit a further paper in a subject of their choice. Other scholarships (eg., art, sport, music, drama) will also be taken at this time.
All examinations will take place at the end of the course. There are four papers (listening, speaking, reading and writing) each worth 25% of the total mark. The speaking assessment comprises a role play, discussion of a photo and a general conversation. Pupils will have dedicated lessons with a native speaker to support their preparation.
