Course summary

The A Level is essential as a support for the Physical Sciences, Engineering and Architecture; it is also desirable for commerce-orientated courses, suitable for potential medics, and highly regarded by both universities and employers. Mathematics can be taken with almost any combination of subjects and is recommended for pupils who can benefit from the course, whatever their other A Levels. It is, however, a most demanding subject. Pupils should only choose it in the Sixth Form if they expect to gain a comfortable grade 8 or 9 at (I)GCSE. We are following the Edexcel linear course. Three two-hour exams are taken at the end of the Upper Sixth: the first two cover Pure Mathematics, with an emphasis on algebra, calculus and trigonometry, while the third covers applied techniques in Mechanics and Statistics.
