Course summary

The course gives an exciting insight into the contemporary world of biology. It covers the key concepts of biology and practical skills are integrated throughout the course. This combination of academic challenge and practical focus makes the prospect of studying A-level biology highly appealing. The King’s College biology department is comprised of enthusiastic, dedicated specialists who are passionate about their subject and who enjoy both laboratory and field-based practical work. We are supported by an excellent and experienced technician.

Entry requirements

To embark on A-levels or a BTEC pupils should have five grades 6 (b) in GCSE/IGCSE and at least grade 4 (OR C) in Mathematics and English in exceptional circumstances the Head Master may allow pupils to join the sixth form without achieving this hurdle as long as motivation can be guaranteed. Such an arrangement be reviewed termly. We strongly recommend pupils start A-levels having achieved a grade 7(or A) GCSE/IGCSE in each of the subjects they have chosen, or in subjects similar to those they have chosen. In addition, pupils should not start Mathematics or a Science A-level Without having achieved a grade 7(or A) in Mathematics.

How you'll be assessed

There are no practical exams but a focus on practical skills which are tested in the terminal papers. This gives us the opportunity to complete numerous practicals lessons that sharpening our pupils' skills and understanding.
