Year 1: Water and carbon cycles: The cycling of water has obvious and significant implications for the health and prosperity of society. Carbon is everywhere: in the oceans, in rocks and soils, in all forms of life and in our atmosphere. Hazards: The atmosphere and the lithosphere intermittently but regularly present hazards to human populations, often in a dramatic and sometimes catastrophic fashion. Changing places: Place can be seen as a definite location. Place differs to the abstract notion of space because places have meaning to people. Space becomes place as we get to know it better. Year 2: Coastal systems and landscapes: Coastal zones are dynamic environments with distinctive landscapes formed by the interaction of a range of wind, marine and terrestrial processes. Global systems and global governance: The global economy and society have altered significantly in recent years as a result of the process of globalisation. There are few subjects either as controversial or as in need of better awareness than attempts to manage and govern human affairs on a global scale. Contemporary urban environments: Population levels are rising and nowhere is this more evident than in urban areas. The future survival of cities depends on sustainable growth and their ability to tackle the major issues.
Each year, we are delighted to welcome new students into our Sixth Form. All prospective Sixth Form students from other schools can enjoy a taster day at Stafford Grammar School and have an interview with the Head of Sixth Form. Offers of entry into the Sixth Form are then conditional upon GCSE results. A place in the Sixth Form is conditional upon students gaining at least 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or equivalent, including at least a grade 4 in Mathematics and English Language. Often there will be a requirement of the minimum of a grade 6 or equivalent for those subjects that the student wishes to study at AS level. For AS Mathematics, students must have followed the Higher Tier course and gained at least a grade 7 or equivalent. Any offer is also conditional upon a successful application including an interview and a satisfactory reference from the student’s current school. Almost everyone in the Lower Sixth Form studies four AS levels and the majority go on to study three A-level courses. Some students do continue with four A-levels, but this is dependent on academic and career aims.
