Classical Civilisation is the study of Greek and Roman literature, history, and culture, with no knowledge of Latin or Greek required. These two civilisations had a rich literary and artistic tradition and a fascinating and well-documented political history, and the A Level course allows students to explore three different topics in great depth. There is a compulsory paper on the epic poetry of Homer and Virgil, the foundation of European literature, and the two optional papers range from the development and literature of the Greek theatre to the politics of the late Roman Republic. Studying the classical world gives a fascinating additional perspective on the modern world, and the course is a unique blend of disciplines which would otherwise not be studied together: literature, history, philosophy, politics and more. Students will study: • Epic poetry in translation: Homer’s Iliad and Virgil’s Aeneid • An aspect of classical culture and art, e.g. Greek Theatre or Greek Art • An aspect of classical beliefs and ideas, e.g. Love and Relationships or Roman Politics Desirable Qualities and Skills for Success: • Proficiency in high-level reading and writing • Passion for reading and interpreting literature • Interest in the Romans and Greeks and their culture • Enjoyment of discussion and debate • Critical thinking Popular A Level Pairings: • Latin • History • Politics • English Literature • Drama & Theatre Studies
