Course summary

Choosing A Level Latin allows you to study both the most important ancient language and its incredible literature in great detail. The Latin language is beautifully expressive and complex and is the direct ancestor of major modern languages such as French, Italian and Spanish. Latin was used by some of the greatest writers in history, from the poet Catullus to the historian Tacitus, whose literature is as influential and inspirational today as it ever has been. A Level Latin allows you to see parts of the ancient world through the eyes of the Romans, and appreciate this unique culture which, despite its many flaws, did more than any other to lay the foundations of civilisation in Europe. Students will study: • Translating Latin prose and poetry into English • Translating English prose into Latin • The work of two Roman poets, e.g. Virgil and Ovid • The work of two Roman prose writers, e.g. Cicero and Tacitus Desirable Qualities and Skills for Success: • Ability to understand complex grammar and varied vocabulary in a foreign language • Proficiency in high-level reading and writing • Passion for reading and interpreting literature • Interest in the Romans and their culture • Enjoyment of discussion and debate
