The course aims to: • develop and use practical techniques to investigate chemistry • observe and use trends in the behaviour of substances • solve chemical problems using mathematical techniques • study chemical problems using appropriate concepts • study the applications and environmental and social aspects of chemistry
Before embarking upon A level Chemistry you should have achieved grade 7 or above in GCSE Science or Chemistry with grade 7 or above in GCSE Maths. Chemistry is a science that rewards an enquiring mind that is prepared to work outside the classroom. A prime requirement is an interest in the subject and how it might play a part in your prospective career.
You will be examined on your ability to: • recall and explain concepts • apply concepts to theoretical, laboratory and commercial situations • quantitatively analyze chemical processes • understand and use laboratory techniques. Paper 1: Assessment is by a two-hour written exam. Weighting: 35% Paper 2: Assessment is by a two-hour written exam. Weighting: 35% Paper 3: Assessment is by a two-hour written exam. Weighting: 30% In addition, pupils will be assessed on their practical skills over the two years and given either a Pass or Unclassified comment.
