Music A Level focuses on the following areas of study: Performance, Composition, Listening and Appraising. Students who sing and play an instrument to about Grade 6 level already have skills that will help significantly towards the performance unit. There is a wide choice of topics in the composition unit. Students can compose in a traditional manner or use software, such as Logic Pro, to create synthesised, contemporary compositions. Students will develop a greater appreciation and understanding of music in the listening and appraising area of study. A wide variety of set works will be studied in detail, providing a broad knowledge of a variety of musical styles over the course. Performance and composition coursework counts for 60 per cent of the A Level, the remaining 40 per cent from listening and appraising.
Candidates are expected to achieve Grade 7 or above in subjects they wish to take at A Level, or, for subjects not previously studied, a 7 in facilitating subjects. A list of these can be found here. All candidates will take two written general papers, one Maths related and one essay writing based, a computer based thinking skills assessment and have an academic interview, with subject specific staff.
