The main reason for studying Mathematics at A Level is that it is interesting and enjoyable. People like its challenge, its clarity, and the fact that you know when you are right. The solution of a problem has an excitement and a satisfaction. It is useful in a variety of careers and is probably one of the most marketable of A Level subjects. Sixth Form Mathematics classes at Dunottar are taught in small groups and students are encouraged to participate and share in discussions. The Mathematics staff are well qualified and approachable, so if there are any difficulties they can be ironed out as they arise. We often enter a team in the Senior Mathematics Team Challenge which is much enjoyed by the participants.
To achieve three A Levels and thrive in our Sixth Form, we expect pupils to achieve a minimum of six grade 6s at GCSE, with those looking to study Maths or Science requiring grade 7s.
At A Level pupils sit 3 equally weighted 2 hour papers. Two in pure mathematics and one in applied mathematics.
