The English language is used every single day. Students will learn so much about how we communicate (non-verbally as well as verbally). It is an ideal course to for those looking to explore careers in Journalism, Teaching, Law and the Social Sciences. Students will study language change over time, and the way in which the English Language has developed nationally and globally. They will study the language of newspapers and the media, and explore meanings and representations. During the course they will be able to write creatively. Students must be willing to read texts in advance and at home during the term. They will explore the origins of words and how language works. They will also use creative writing for articles, reports and evaluations. Lessons are often more like tutorials at university (particularly in Year 13), in that the key texts, once explored, and themes covered, need to be discussed and dissected, looking at different critical approaches. This requires students to share and support their own views and opinions, and conduct extra reading outside lesson hours if they are to achieve the best grades.
Students should have a love of Language and its contexts, including Sociology and Psychology, and/or a deep curiosity about language and communication. Ideally, students will achieve a 6+ in GCSE English Language.
• Exam (80%) • Coursework (20%)
