The Further Mathematics specification is taught to able Mathematicians, in parallel with studying Advanced Level Mathematics, over two years and consists of the three papers for A Level (see A-Level section) plus papers in Core Pure Mathematics 1, Core Pure Mathematics 2, Further Pure Mathematics 1 and Decision Mathematics 1.
Students must have achieved at least Grade 8 in GCSE/IGCSE Mathematics and be confident in all mathematical topics studied to Higher Tier GCSE level. There is also a requirement that preparation work is completed during the summer before.
Paper 1 and Paper 2: Core Pure Mathematics (50% of A-Level grade) • These two papers will examine the following topics: complex numbers, Matrices, Further algebra and functions, Further calculus, Further vectors, Polar coordinates, Hyperbolic functions, Differential equations. Further Pure Mathematics 1 (25% of A-Level grade) • This paper will examine the following topics: Further Trigonometry, Further calculus, Further differential equations, Coordinate systems, Further vectors, Further numerical methods, Inequalities. Decision Mathematics 1 (25% of A-Level grade) • This paper will examine the following topics: Algorithms and graph theory, Algorithms on graphs I and II, Critical path analysis, Linear programming.
