Course summary

There are four elements to the course: 1. A study of the Early Tudor period 1485-1547 with a focus on political and international history during the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII. There is also a study of the political, religious and social challenges facing England during the ‘mid-Tudor’ crisis era of 1547-58. 2. A study of the USA between 1804-1865 with a focus on the causes and course of the Civil War and on the theme of westward expansion. 3. A thematic study covering 150-200 years. Popular culture and the issue of witchcraft, witch hunts and witch trials in Europe and North America 1500-1700. 4. A ‘Topic Essay’ of 4000 words based upon investigating and researching a historical controversy. The subject of the investigation is entirely the choice of the candidate - it can be anything!

How you'll be assessed

There are three written exams at the end of Year 13: 1. The Early Tudors and mid-Tudor Crisis 1485-1558. 1 hour 30 minutes, 25% of the total. 2. The USA 1804-1865. 1 hour exam 15% of the total. 3. Popular Culture and the Witchcraze of the 16th and 17th centuries.. 2-hour 30-minute exam, 40% of the total. In addition, there is the ‘topic essay’ – a 4000-word investigation. 20% of total
