Many lessons are practical based, where students will be guided to become more independent as the course goes on. They will need to keep a careful record of their practical lessons as the exam board visits to check that students are able to fulfil their practical criteria. Other lessons will be theory based, and whilst there is a lot of theoretical content we do try to make these as interactive as possible, using molymod and balloons to make models and computer simulations. Google classroom is extensively used, with lesson content and useful information placed on there.
The course is entirely assessed by three exams at the end of Year 13. ● Paper 1: Periodic table, Elements and Physical Chemistry. This assesses modules 1, 2, 3 & 5, and is 2hrs 15min long. Paper 1 counts for 37% of the A level. ● Paper 2: Synthesis and Analytical techniques. This assesses modules 1, 2, 4 & 6, and is also 2hrs 15min long. Paper 2 counts for 37% of the A level. ● Paper 3: Unified Chemistry. This is a synoptic paper which assesses all modules, and is 1hr 30 mins long. It counts for 26% of the A level.
