Course summary

Pupils immediately engage in a bespoke curriculum for Performing Arts, led by all our Music and Drama staff who relish working collaboratively on many projects. Each pupil performs on stage in the first half of term, before embarking on an intensive and extensive set of skills courses. As well as various Music & Drama schemes of work, there is an option to take a Technical Theatre course and play an active role in productions and concerts. Our Drama programme is highly inclusive, and focuses on the idea of a ‘company’ to develop all the skills and interests that are associated with a production. Pupils stage-manage productions, build sets, design props, plot lighting, do make-up, etc, as well as act. There are at least three productions each year and recent productions have included a play written by a local author about the tragedies that befell railway workers and their families whilst building the Settle Carlisle railway, an operetta that was produced in just 4 days as part of the School’s ‘Challenge Week’ , this is a week of where the Performing Arts are very much to the fore. We currently follow the Eduqas specification for both GCSE & A Level. The weighting towards practical performance is 60% at GCSE, and 30% at A Level, with a focus on Theatre that includes externally moderated performances by visiting examiners.
